The Boston Tree Party gave the FPNA two lovely semi-dwarf apple trees. Gillette enthusiastically supports this project. They have committed to a daily watering schedule and have even paid the fee for the tree planting kit, which includes an animal protection system. Their landscaper is testing the soil to be sure it is appropriate for the trees and we are told the fruit will be safe to eat. The two varieties are Roxbury Russet and Esopus Spitzenburg. Heartfelt thanks go to Gary Hall at P&G.
The tree planting occurred May 20, 2012 at the Gillette park off of Binford Street. Neighbors brought snacks and beverages for a picnic in the park. Young arborists and children threw the first shovel full of dirt. Photos by Christine Vaillancourt.
We will be holding an apple tree birthday party on Sunday, September 7, 2014 at 2pm. Neighbors and families are welcome to join in a small celebration. Come eat apples, apple crisp and apple related snacks and beverages. We’ll take some pictures to record how the trees-and the kids have grown!
